FAQ

What does umoja do?

UMOJA serves as the liaison between Black undergraduates at the University of Pennsylvania and university administrators. The UMOJA Board represents the interests of the Black undergraduate community and advocates for change. UMOJA attends administrator meetings, fills university external seats, manages and distributes funding from Makuu: The Black Cultural Center, and promotes and uplifts the work of its Constituents.

can my organization partner with umoja?

As an umbrella group, UMOJA does not collaborate directly with other student organizations on events. If you or your group is interested in partnering with a Black cultural organization for your program, please review the list of our Constituents to see what group best aligns with the vision of your event. The UMOJA Board is happy to connect you.

does umoja work with organizations outside of its constituency?

UMOJA is a part of 7B, the primary minority coalition at the University of Pennsylvania. The other 7B groups are the Asian Pacific Student Coalition, Natives at Penn, Latinx Coalition, Penn Association for Gender Equity, Lambda Alliance, and United Minorities Council. The 7B work together to lobby administrators and host town halls for students due to the intersections of marginalized identities and the power of collective bargaining.
